"Reproductive Health Act" (House Bill 2495 and Senate Bill 1942)
Pro-life legislation that has recently been signed into law in southern states of the US has renewed vigor in the Illinois legislature to pass the "Reproductive Health Act" (HB 2495/SB 1942) and a bill that would repeal current law that requires parents to be notified when a minor seeks an abortion (HB 2467/SB 1594).

The legislative session ends on May 31, and the supporters of this extreme abortion legislation want to send it to the governor to sign into law before then!

As a Catholic health care organization, we vehemently oppose this legislative package.

Please contact legislators NOW and ask them to not support these bills!

HB 2495/SB 1942 would remove all protections under current state law for unborn children at any gestation period. Furthermore, the partial birth abortion ban would be repealed, it would require abortions to be covered by insurance, and it would strip all right of conscience protections away for health care professionals.

HB 2467/SB 1594 would repeal the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, meaning parents would no longer be notified when a minor seeks an abortion.  This removes a reasonable safeguard and the chance for parents to be involved with a profoundly difficult decision for their child.

As a Catholic health care ministry, these pieces of legislation give us great pause and disturb us. Staying true to our mission “to reveal and embody Christ’s healing love for all people through our high-quality Franciscan health care ministry,” we are concerned about the potential impact that the passage of these pieces of legislation would have on our organization and our health care professionals.

If you’d like to learn more about the legislation, you can read a fact sheet from the Catholic Conference of Illinois here for Senate Bill1942/House Bill 2495 and another fact sheet on Senate Bill 1594/House Bill 2467 here.
